Port Coquitlam Brief History

Port Coquitlam is located 27 km east of Greater Vancouver, it sits at the confluence of the Fraser River and the Pitt River. The name Coquitlam comes from the Salish word 'Kwayhquitlum', meaning red fish in the river, referring to the river’s annual salmon spawning run. Coquitlam borders it on the north and the cities of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows lie across the Pitt River. Port Coquitlam was first incorporated as a municipality on March 7, 1913. Port Coquitlam is bounded on the south by the Fraser River, on the east by the Pitt River, on the north by the picturesque Coast Mountains, including Burke and Coquitlam Mountains, and on the west by the Coquitlam River. Port Coquitlam is almost entirely bisected by a Canadian Pacific Railway yard. Port Coquitlam is often referred to as "Poco." This area was originally mostly farm land, and because of the densification and expansion of Vancouver, it has now become mostly suburban housing, especially on its northern and southwestern sides. The region has diversified with a variety of industrial and commercial developments, including metal fabrication, high technology industries, and transportation. The Canadian Pacific Railway has a major rail yard in the central sector of the city and is the largest CPR yard in British Columbia.
